I have two sticks of patriot extreme ram, exact same speed and specs however one stick is 8gb and the other is 4gb. Can i use both sticks giving me 12gb total or will it cause problems such as BSOD's or anything like that. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give because I have found a good deal of conflicting information online.

Solution
Try with the 8GB in slot 1 closest to CPU and the 4 GB in slot 3 - your mobo supports flex mose so should end with 8GB in dual channel and 4 in single channel, also raise the DRAM voltage to 1.575 that may smooth things out and get rid of the BSODs

Yes it can cause problems, any time you mix packages of DRAM it can be problematic, even of the same exact model. May simply not work, can cause boot problems, BSOD, corruption etc....or they may play perfectly fine and no problems...there's just no guarantees

mobo is a z87-d3hp. I had both sticks installed but in a slot 1 and 2 configuration so I figured that as long as I was not trying to run in dual channel that I would be fine. However after a while I began to get bsod memory management errors. So i took out the 4gb stick but I am still getting crashes but this time it is saying irql_not less or equal. Another really important thing about this situation that I forgot to mention is that this only happens when the computer goes to full sleep due to inactivity.

Is the single ram module in the dimm slot closest to CPU? Best thing to do is run memtest64 for 24 hours to check for errors and determine is memory is bad. Also, may want to go into your bios and make sure ram clock speed is at default, timings match default and voltage is correct.

May also want to try just the 4gb chip and see if you are still getting bsod.

Are you over clocked? May be unstable if you are.

The single 8gb module is not currently in the dimm slot closest to the cpu, although I did have it there originally. I will rerun memtest and check my bios as well. In the end though it appears that the 4gb module was not causing the bsods am I right?

Would I raise the DRAM voltage in bios or through a utility of some kind? Thanks again I truly appreciate some advice from people with a better grasp on this.
