How do you recover original SD card files that were unintentionally replaced with new files?

When my phone broke from being dropped into a pool, I took my (dried) SD card and put it into my friend's phone a few days later to recover those files until I got a new phone. However, none of my files were coming up on my friend's phone, so I took it back out and decided to wait until I get my new phone.

I just got a new phone and put my SD card inside. However, the files that appear on the drive are my friend's, not mine. It seems as if somehow, his files (from internal phone storage) were transferred to my SD card, replacing all my files in the process.

How is this possible, and how can I retrieve my original files?

When a file is "deleted" on a storage device the data is still there, it just changes the bit in the begining of the to file that tells it if it can overwitten or not and once this bit changes it is no longer viewable by a normal file explorer.

If this is all that happened then it can be recovered by any one of the many data recovery/undelete programs out there.

If the data got overwritten then it is gone forever and nothing that can be done.
