Hello,

Around seven months ago I upgraded to my first SSD, the Samsung 840 Pro. I have been using it since then and I thought its been pretty great. Things are way faster then before, but I upgraded from a really old and slow HDD, so I never had anything to compare.

I noticed copying files wasn't nearly as fast as It should be. I already had a sneaking suspicion i wasn't getting the right results. So I downloaded Samsung Magician to run a benchmark, and found some incredibly low results.

Here is a picture showing the results I got:

Under 200 Read, under 150 write and very low IOPS as well. I am decent with computers, but have limited knowledge. This was my first time ever even changing my harddrive, let alone upgrading to an SSD. So I am not sure what I could have done wrong.

I have a good computer.

Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Ram: 16Gbs Corsair Vengeance DDR3
CPU: i5-2500k
GPU: GTX 580
OS: Windows 8.1

When Upgrading. I did a clean install from Windows 7, to Windows 8.1. I am not sure where I could have gone wrong, others have said something about 6Gbps port or something, but I am not entire sure what that would even mean.

This is the only drive installed on my computer, with the OS. Roughly 25Gbs free.

So I hope someone can help.

Thanks

In your motherboard, the top block of four SATA connectors is SATA 3, which provides 6Gbps. The bottom block is SATA 2 at 3Gbps. Still, that wouldn't account for that much performance difference.

Please run this command to see if TRIM is enabled:

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

You want this set to "0", which means TRIM enabled. If you don't already know, TRIM is an operating system based feature that helps SSD counter the natural performance decrease as each cell gets written.

Also, check your SATA controller mode in the BIOS. It should preferably beset to AHCI.

Your motherboard has 4 SATA 3 (6Gb/s) ports.

Double-check that your 840 Pro is connected to one of the Intel 6Gb/s ports (SATA3_0 or SATA3_1), not to one of the ASMedia 6Gb/s ports (SATA3_A0 or SATA3_A1).

See page 13 of your motherboard manual for the location of the ports.

Yeah, I should have realized. I wasn't even in AHCI mode. So I switched to 6Gbps and to AHCI and its where it should be. Thanks.
