I am swapping out my old MSI Fm2-E35 and my A4 AMD processor for the MSI H97 motherboard and an i5 4690. Do I have to reinstall my programs like Windows 7 if I change my processor and motherboard? (I will have to put all my other components onto my new mobo also)

More about : swapping mobo cpu

Wait, does that mean I lose all my files? Would I need a new windows key aswell?

You could you know...back up your files. But yes you do need to re-install Windows. Sometimes you can get away with not reinstalling if you're swapping the motherboard out..but its better to do a clean install in most cases anyway.

When you're going to reuse the same hard drive that has still on it, you need to delete the partition with everything on it and format the drive so its empty.

The Windows CD key is tied to the motherboard..so if your key is an OEM key (dell/hp) it may/may not work as you would need to active windows again.

OEM? What is that?

....OEM - original equipment manfacturer.. I even put (dell/hp) beside it as examples. When you go into the installer for windows (you've put the windows cd in..hit any key to boot from cd) it will tell you to do an upgrade or custom install of windows.. You hit custom. You then get to see you've got a hard drive detected..it will already have stuff on it so you want to delete it.. there is a delete option right there...and then a format option.

I think I'd rather not screw up anything ^^ I'll have Frys set up windows for me when I buy my new processor and mobo.

If they charge you, I wouldn't bother. If you're wiping out the hard drive anyway after you back up what you want to save what would you screw up? The Windows installer has interactive prompts..you really have to try pretty hard to screw it up.

Well, I'm not sure what the partitions mean and do. Or how there is 2 partitions.

that is just an example..... a partition would be if you have a restore partition if the computer its lets a say a dell.. Again.....if you're deleting all of the data to reformat the drive..it does not matter.
