Installing a new HDD with existing intrnal Raid 1

I have a machine that has a RAID 1 array over 2 x 2TB disks internally. I think it's a simple Windows 7 software RAID.

I have to replace the primary disk, which is seperate, to replace it with a new SSD. For reasons, too long to explain, I can't migrate or clone the old disk, so I have to start with a clean install, on the new SSD with Win 7.

Question is, what is the easiest way, to configure the existing internal raid setup, on the new disk?

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

Hello,

As the RAID is only in software, you could copy the primary partition of your actual setup to the SSD, thus giving you the identical settings as before. That means though that your SSD's capacity should be bigger than your primary partition.

Yes, that's it excatly.

2 x 2TB's which are/were set up in RAID 1 through Windows 7 (I think - it's certanly not set in the BIOS)

and the third, new, SSD which will be the primary drive.

I thought about trying to do this, but the setup was, that the system partition, which enables the boot, was on a different physical drive, which has been removed! This SSD now how it's won system and boot partitions, with the OS installed, would it work if I just copied the main partition over, including the OS?

Only problem is, if I clone the entire drive, it has no system partition, so won't boot.

I have tried to do a repair on this disk, but don't get the option to (I had the intention of adding a system partition, to make it bootable, then cloning the entire drive).

If you still have the old HDD, put it back and see if it still works like before. If it is so, please go to Computer --> Manage --> Disk management, do a screenshot with the partitioning and post here, maybe there is something wrong with the partitions.
