My Alienware m14x, why is it so slow at everything?

About 2 years back I purchased an Alienware m14x. It cost me about $3000. It's performance has always been very bad at all games. Before I bought it I thought that it would run most games very well, with a gt650m and an i73820QM processor. When I bought it 2 years back I wasn't that into gaming. In fact, the reason I bought it was just to play MC. When I tryed to play other games however, it basically always sucked. For example BF3, I would set all the setting to the lowest and still get 20FPS. I haven't really ever thought about seeing if I can improve it's performance until now, because it played MC and I used to play all my other games on xBox, but recently I have become more interested in PC gaming. I didn't realize exactly how slow it was until now when I ran the skydiver 3dmark benchmark. I scored 1034. It showed me I was better than 0% of others, and normal gaming laptops should have a core of 9595. I just don't understand how it is slow. Please help! Thanks!

Well, thats an 3000$ not very well spent, sadly :pfff:

You can not gain anything from ranting (don`t know what its called, forgive me if something else).

You should try to improve your gaming performance.

Reinstall windows. Install software that helps pc perform better (Razer Game Booster)

Unlike a Desktop, you can`t upgrade your Laptop expect RAM and Storage. How much RAM you got? Have you got an SSD?

If you have got enough RAM (6-8GB) and an SSD, you can`t really do anything more.

And yeah, GT 650M isn`t the best card out there. But its not your mistake, mobile cards DO last shorter.

Save up money and get a proper non-portable gaming PC, use your Alienware as backup/portable light gaming or whatever.

Good luck, hope you get something you will be happy with :)

If you haven`t got more questions, you should select the best answer.

If you have more questions, ask.

Well I guess it's too late to mention that you should never buy Alienware/Dell. Money down the drain for you, unfortunately. Laptops aren't designed for games anyways. They might be able to handle the browser games but any computer can do that really. If you wanted to play games you should've bought/built a desktop PC, like FaustoGomez mentioned.

Even if your budget was $1500 you would have been able to play every game in existence on max settings 1080p and then some. $3000 would have even got you into the area of 2K or 4K/Ultra HD gaming but it's a little late for that now. Things you could try however to get the most out of your investment is download and run Malwarebytes and Bitdefender and run full scans. Also install CCleaner and let it remove everything it finds. Also go into the programs and remove all the bloatware and also update everything to the latest version. Apart from that there's not much you can do.

If you want to keep your alienware. Find a newer motherboard, and buy it, upgrade your cpu/gpu. For $600ish you should be able to find a 880m, about another $200 will get you the newer haseell motherboards for the mx14, and CPU I'm not sure of prices, but alienwares are extremely upgradable.

I have a i7 4930mx, 32gb ram, 3x540gb crucial m550 msata, 1 Tb Samsung evo ssd, and a gtx 880m. Been thinking about picking up a k4100m to swap out my 880m with when I know the week will be more workstation than gaming.

But id head over to the alienware specific forums and look into upgrading yours. You should be at the very least able to upgrade to a 680m.

I had the same problem. It's because your computer is recognizing the integrated graphics card (Intel Graphics 5000 or 4000) and isn't recognizing the GT650m. I think you have to change it in the Nvidia control panel, NOT Nvidia GeForce Experience. I was asking the same question as you when the optimal settings for BF4 used to be "Low" for me. Now I can run BF4 smoothly at Ultra settings.

Hi, I have a M14x and i use it a lot for gaming. I can play Fallout 3 in max settings and having very good fps. The problem is that every 8-12 months it has problem and decrease fps in games. But with a general cleaning of the laptop mainly fans and a change of the thermal pastes, is like new again runs the game just as new. ;)

Hope you understood me :) i am not a native speaker.

Also check the answer from LegitM4fia, it can also be.
