What has happened to this drive? What kind of error messages have you got after attaching this drive on your computer? Why do you write it is failed?
Perhaps, you can try it on another computer to see whether it could be read functionally there.
some drive data recovery software could help you rescue your wanted pictures and downloads.
But, if this drive could not be read well there, send it to some experts for help.

Thanks, the hard drive would not start, but I checked some YouTube videos on replacing hard drive in a laptop and found that it was easy to remove and that I might be able to recover data from it if I put it carefully wrapped in the freezer. That worked. I not only have been able to download photos, videos and files that I had not backed up, but am using the computer now on the net to make this reply. I think it got too hot and because it is somewhat old, the tolerance for heat was not adequate anymore. I am really happy with the result and will buy a replacement drive and install it myself.

Windows woud not start and I also could not hear the drive - I tried it three times before I went the library so I could do some online research
