Arctic Paste on 4790k with stock cooler, will it help?

I've been having trouble keeping the temps down with the stock cooler and had to undervolt, My current stable undervolt is 4.0ghz (4.4 turbo as standard) at 1.195v but under load when playing a game like watch dogs it raises to 74-78. And 95-96 in AIDA64, will replacing the thermal solution with arctic help at all or am I wasting my money?

Would rather not get another cooler like the evo because I'm not sure if it will fit in my case and just don't want to hassle with it since i'm not overclocking

Hi. Similar situation here: i7-4790k with stock cooler, default settings so no overclocking, on Asus Maximus VII Ranger MB, in Zalman Z11 case (6 fans, I believe).

My temperatures starts at around 45 when idle and reaches 95 when playing light weight games (like Diablo 3). In benchmarks it can reach 102. Usually, under real life load - game, video conf call, it works at around 85.

Room temp is quite high - around 26-28, I think.

Yeah, I agree that changing cooler should help, why wouldn't it. It is just disappointing that stock cooler, which according to Intel should go up to 72 degrees on that CPU, actually goes 30 degrees higher. It makes me worry that something might be faulty.

The Hyper TX3 is only about $20, far better than the stock cooler, and appropriate for someone not overclocking. Its also quite a bit smaller than the Hyper 212 EVO.

I suspect your temperature problems are related to case management and airflow. Using better thermal compound might help temperatures somewhat, but you can only expect maybe 1–3° lower than what you're currently seeing if that's the only change you make.

All the review sites using consistent test beds report thermal performance is better with Devil's Canyon by 10°C or so at a given frequency. People posting on a forum don't constitute a trend, we have no idea what their setups are like.

It's really bs that Intel would supply such a crap cooler and paste for stock temps, I shouldn't even have to undervolt the CPU just to get it to stay out of the 90s. If the thermal paste doesn't work (perhaps I created air bubbles during installation or uneven contact) I'll consider getting the TX3, how many degrees can I expect to shave off with the TX3? Is it significantly smaller then the evo?

Intel doesn't have control over everything. Like I said, your airflow and surrounding environment are huge factors as well.

The 212 EVO is bigger and performs better than the TX3. I just recommended the TX3 because its cheaper and easier to fit into smaller cases.

^ Guru3D found the TX3 to knock off 15°C from a (edit: overclocked) Core 2 Quad QX9770. That's a 136 W processor, much harder to cool than yours (88 W). But again, your mileage will vary if your airflow is not so good.
