About 2 years ago, I bought an HP p7-1226s. It is a good computer, but is severely lacking in the graphics department. That is why I would like to upgrade it with possibly a GTX 750/750ti, or maybe an r9 270. Could I do that without having to change the power supply? I do not know the brand, but it is 300 watts.

The gtx 750 Ti would probably do fine without having to upgrade the psu.

If it's a stock PSU, I would not recommend a 750 Ti since it's asking for 400 watts. A GTX 750 would be better.

On nvidia's website, it says the minimum requirement is 300 watts. Are you sure? I've also heard that some 300 watt power supplies can work with it, and some can't.

A generic 300w PSU on a prebuilt machine will be a gamble with a GTX 750 Ti. I wouldn't trust it. I had a 460w PSU of the same brand and after running my GTX 660 on it for about a year, that PSU blew out, so I had to swap the PSU for a much better quality unit with more wattage. The XFX TS 550w would be a nice upgrade for a GTX 760 if you're willing to afford a better graphics card.

A 300W supply should be able to handle a 750ti , I've seen one run on a 280w.

I have the same HP system HP P7-1226s as you. I am running windows 7. I ordered a MSI GTX 750 and it goes to the startup screen and hangs. Can you tell new if you found something that works with this system?

Thanks

This is a common theme with the newer cards on the market not running on prebuilt machines.

Do you have the latesT BIOS?

Sometimes they just won't run at all.

Being a newer card what would be something earlier to try. I did try to update the bios on the motherboard to a newer rev but when I rebooted it still showed the older version.

I did successfully upgrade to a GTX 660 on my HP desktop. Does this mean that I will have problems upgrading to an 870? Will I then have to find a GTX 680 which should work for me? I'm confused.
