Even after restarting MX870, reconnecting I get above error message. Meanwhile network is all clear, printer shows 'green' light, idle in System Preferences. No printing and no information from printer either.

More about : printer connected

If you can't even print out a test page from the printer to get the IP address, it's likely dead.

As in needs to be replaced. If a test print does not work, and you power cycled it, you can't do much else aside from get a repair tech to look at it. As long as it's not something silly like a jam. I'm talking about a test print directly from the printer control menu, not from the computer.

I think dead is far away from reality. I discovered today that scanning works perfect. Problem isolated to printing - no progress. Community help!

Still need more info. Can you print a test page from the printer? How is it connected? I was guessing network since you said something about "network is all clear" whatever that means exactly.

If it's on the network, can you ping the IP? This happen suddenly or after you moved things around or changed settings? Did you make sure the cables are in properly, try a new cable maybe? LOTS of reasons why you can't print. Did you remove the printer and try to set it up as a new device again?

Cannot print test page because I don't know how. Scanned manual set-up and troubleshooting sections and Googled it as well. No luck. Printer is on wifi and I see it as wireless client of my AirPort. This is all expected given that I can scan without problem.

In a further step I have reset the printing system. The Pixma shows up and I can add it - however, it is shown only as a scanner (but not printer). I have downloaded and re-installed latest printer driver from Canon just now again. No change (even after another reset).

Try connecting the printer directly with a USB cable, see if it works that way.
This is not exactly a test page, but it will tell you if the printer can print at all.

Press the Setup button.

Select Device settings, then press the OK button.

Use the button to select LAN settings, then press the OK button.

Use the button to select Confirm LAN settings, then press the OK button.

Use the button to select Print LAN details, then press the OK button.

Select Yes, then press the OK button.

Did as recommended and go the Networks Configurations printed out fine. When toggling between wifi and LAN, i.e. Mac connected with USB, the status shows the LINK STATUS as enable or disable respectively; however, in none of the modes does the printer show on my Mac

thank for your hint; unfortunately, the manual does not work for me at all; for example: 'test page' does not return any hits when searching the pdf-formatted manual on my Mac; Google search returns "... printing test page ..."and then refers to manual; beats me!

Does it print if setup though the USB cable? Is there another system you can set the printer with? Could be an issue on the computer.

K, guys. Got the problem resolved: I needed to reinstall the printer driver again which somehow has gotten corrupted. Thanks for your support anyway.
