Options for a rebuild/update...

Hi all,

Currently I have the following systems:
Z68X-UD3H-B3 16GB 2500K + 3 5400rpm 2TB drives (750w PSU) and R9 270x video
P35 Gigabyte 4GB 6850 CPU 650W PSU

I am looking at doing a couple things, flash Z68 to F12 for support of Ivy Bridge CPU and get the 3570k (I think), or...new Z97 mobo and 47xxK processor 16GB (4x4GB) and new video card and moving Z68 to the 6850 system (mobo/mem/cpu/stock cooling fan). I need to price out my options and I am NOT overclocking either system any more as I see no need for it. My main box (the Z68) is on 24x7, the other is my DAW with FW400 Motu 828Mk II audio interface (been thinking connecting main box to it as well..but that's another project).

My thoughts were to move the Z68 to the DAW box and have current image prior to this made via Paragon Software (purchasing full version for universal restore ability). Note that Main and DAW have same Mfr for mobos. I can live with the Z68 flashed to support Ivy Bridge (maybe update 2500K to 3570K down road for more ummph). What do you think? I want this to be as least intrusive rebuilding as possible (hence imaging both systems before the rebuild) and as cost effective as well. I have the R9 270x in main box which I would consider moving to the DAW system and getting maybe the R9 28/9x card for main system (main workhorse/gaming box but I do have GW2 on DAW as a backup ;-)).

Comments/suggestions welcome, keep in mind a) cost effectiveness and b) easiest way to do this. I have a TON of crap installed (samples/instruments) on the DAW and don't relish spending several hours reinstalling all this stuff all over again.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Well the DAW has 3 1TB 7200 rpm drives in it so it's fine for its storage. And I am ok with the 5400's on main system but have been pondering going SSD for boot drive but since it's on 24x7 I'd rather not do that just yet.

The other thing would be memory for new mobo? the 1600Mhz is probably what I would be running since I am not planning any OC on it. That's also what I have on it for memory on the Z68X. So looking at replacing the mobo/cpu (will Zalman CNPS 9500 AT work on these Z97 1150 CPU sockets? If not I'll either go stock or get aftermarket as well), video (R9 270x or higher) and memory. I've got 650W PSU in there now as well. Just looking at options for decent mid-range mobo and either 4770K or 4790K cpu. Other alternatives would be nice to see for price/performance for a 24x7 system (why turn off for a handful of hrs, turn on in morning for an hour or so, shutdown while at work, rinse/repeat?).

The cooler is listed to support 1150 sockets, probably just need the bracket and what not if it's not included.

As for upgrades, the SSD does also help with loading times of programs if you want to throw anything on there. It should still be in consideration in case. Maybe not now if you don't think you'll need it now, but later on maybe.

If you really have nothing much to go for, you could just go for the haswell-refresh stuff, you don't really need to change your ram unless you want to get a fresh set or incompatible ram or something.

If you're not going to overclock, you can consider upgrading to a H97 motherboard and a xeon e3 1231v3 or something. It's almost an i7 at the price of an i5 but without the integrated graphics. (just an option as a cpu/motherboard upgrade).

Maybe someone else might have some other ideas of how you could upgrade your system.

Well, sorry for not being to active on this (it isn't going to happen for a bit still). I am leaning towards Gigabyte since that's what is in the case now and Win7 running on it. I figured with Paragon Software B&R I should be able to do what acronis called Universal Restore to get the system at least up/running hopefully. I've got a Thermaltake Armor case so hopefully there aren't any issues with the Gigabyte mobo sitting on existing screw anchor holes. Anyways, will be looking at all options. Other consideration would be a Z87 but I'd rather get fairly current as it is once I go down this road.
