So I was trying to wire these LED strip onto a 3 pin fan connector. Splice some wires, and connect them, simple enough. But once I plugged the 3 pin fan connector w/ the leds wire onto them into my motherboard, I hear a pop, crack, and smelled burnt stuff and then a small fire ignited.

Here's the picture of the damage...

So turn off the computer, and start it again...it seems to be running fine...not exactly sure what the stuff that burned actually does since everything seems normal now. Anyone have a clue what the area that burned actually does? Should I be worried?

btw, the motherboard is an MSI Z77A-G45.

It sounds like you exceeded the header's rated amperage and/or voltage load, probably the amp load. That would be very easy to do with LEDs, depending on the type of LEDs, the power requirements and the type of circuit you used. Does that fan header still work with a fan, and if so, are you able to control the speed at all?

What are the specifics of the LED circuit you connected?
