I was looking (or dreaming) of a second 290 and came to this on Newegg:

TONS and TONS and TONS of models have 3 or less stars... and not like 3 reviews, like consistently bad reviews...
The only great brand consistently over 3 stars seems to be Sapphire...
I got the Sapphire Tri-X 290 in February 2014, came with Bios 15.042.000.000.000000
I had a few BSOD's, but they were driver errors, and were fixed with Driver updates and updating Adobe Flash and Shockwave Player manually (NOTE: this is what fixed the crashing whle playing youtube/other flash programs)
I also hear that newer Tri-X's (kinda wanted another) have Stock clocks of 947/1250... what the heck? Can anyone confirm this? Did they really do this to these cards? that's not even OC'd...
this is the newest bios I found too: (glad I never flashed mine...)

My friend got his Powercolor PCS+ R9 290 in February 2014 too, and he had no issues either, aside from the flash player BSOD... both of our cards are physically healthy

This makes me afraid to buy anything but the Vapor-X (which is what I wanted, or might get one day, lol, I can't decide if I want another 290)
Also, it seems the 1 star reviews have only been since about May... Right about when the pricing dropped back to normal. Hmm...

So... Does anyone else out there have R9 290/290X/295X2 RMA's???
Is this just in the newer manufactured cards? Are these just stupid reviewers not updating Mobo drivers and Graphics Drivers and shit like that? I actually saw people having to Flash their graphics Bios just to get their card operating... This is honestly ridiculous.

Please share your stories and opinions, let's make this a large thread, it's very interesting to me...

I got r9 290 vapor-x oc 3 weeks ago, installed without issues, downloaded latest drivers and works flawlessly so far. But as you mentioned it's sapphires vapor-x kind of flagship of sapphire (except 295x2) now so maybe not right for comparison.

Yeah, its exactly what I wanted, as imho Sapphire has best build quality and their reviews here tend to show it... Have you heard anything about this? see or hear of all these issues people have with 290's? At lwast I can order a Vapor-X and expect it to work... but gosh :/

also how does your Vapor-X run Battlefield 4 ;) I'd love to compare frame rates. My Tri-X runs 60-70 to110 all ultra 4xmsaa in 1080p on DX11 and Mantle
