Hi all, this is my first post, would just like to firstly say hi to everyone.

I've been using this forum to do research on many thingss related to hardware choices of purchuse and help with hardware compatibility etc.

More recently i havd been doing some research on overclocking, but still very new to it all.

I just have a few questions related to my over clock.

First off my specs are

MSI 990FX GD80
AMD FX8350
8GB CRUCIAL BALLISTIX 1866 RAM
SAPPHIRE 270X VAPOR X
TRANSCEND 128GB SSD
ANTEC 650WATT TRUE POWER
COOLER MASTER HYPER 212X
NZXT TEMPEST 410 ELITE CASE
2X 120 NZXT FRONT INTAKE FANS
1X 120 NZXT EXHAUST FAN

Second question related to image below
post-2458-0-80674800-1406073253.jpg

What i did was go into click bios from the msi center manager. Disabled turbo, and enabled manual multiplier of x20.0 and manual bus speed 215.0.

Been running prime95 on the torture test now for 9 hours and temps are stable at 53c.

No errors found on all 8 workers.

I havent changed anything else, everything else is just on auto, voltages etc.

I was not aware that oc was going to be this easy? My worry is that i might of overlooked something and being niave to think i could of done it correctly.

Cpu z shows 4.3ghz but windows shows 4.0? Is this normal?

Next i know i should not exceed 60c on the core temps but is 53c a good temp to be on for this cooler? Also perhaps i should drop the voltage? Core voltage is still on auto and csn be seen in the pic to be at 1.328.

Fan on the cooler seems to be at around 55% and is still quiet.

Any advice were i should go to from here?

Thank you all.

Solution

They all have roughly the same principles.

Turn off turbo and all of the power saving settings like C1E, C6 and Cool n Quiet.

Set CPU Ratio/Multiplier and Voltage to manual, and slowly bump up the multiplier. I believe it's set a 20x at stock, so you could try going to 22x.

Save changes, hop into windows. Run a temperature and voltage monitor like HWMonitor, and a stress test program like Prime95. You should have these downloaded beforehand to make...
it is a good, stable overclock, and yes it is normal that windows and cpu-z have different readings. you can go over 60c on the cores, just stay under 80c. i wouldnt lower the voltages by much if they are already at stock. you can overclock even further if you want to, with your mobo and cooler, you should be able to hit 4.6 just fine.

Thank you both for the quick replies.

I will do some research on some voltage changing, and try get upto 4.6ghz stable.

Will post my results later when i get home from work.

Turn off all power saving settings (CnQ, C1E, C6) and LLC (might actually have to set that to max, been a while since I fiddled with it).

Set voltages to manual.

Intended for ASUS motherboards, but the same principles apply regardless:

Okay so press the oc gene 2 button on my board boot up check hwm and im now on 4.51ghz, been running prime 95 on blend test tor 2hours now and no errors or stopped workers yet. Sitting at 52 53 degrees on 1.336v on the core. I dont think oc genie is a gd idea to run this oc bcoz the values jump up and down, i will try that tutorial jook, tried another tutorial lastnite in bios and i lost signal to display, had to remove cmos battery sigh, i need to learn more.

I will have to go home and check currently at work, i tried to set the voltage to the core to 1.45 but it never gets near to that goes to like 1.386 and droops down to 1.334 at times

Hey mate i have no idea,

Im quite clueless about this msi board setup in bios, i know now what llc is, and this mobo dnt support it in bios.

There arent many fx8350 oc 990fxa gd80 guides out there, so dnt know were to start really

Save changes, hop into windows. Run a temperature and voltage monitor like HWMonitor, and a stress test program like Prime95. You should have these downloaded beforehand to make things easier. I'd also run them before changing anything in the BIOS to make sure your system is stable at stock settings. Generally, run prime95 for 30 mins to 1 hour when fiddling within BIOS. Once you have an overclock you're happy with you should run it for longer to make sure your system is stable. If any 'workers' fail then you have something wrong with your overclock. You may need to increase the CPU voltage slightly, but do not exceed 1.5v. For an overclock to 22x/4.4 GHz you shouldn't need to go anywhere near that high. Also, try not to exceed 62C on the cores or 72C on the socket for your CPU temperatures.

The guide I linked you earlier, although for ASUS motherboards, explains these very principles. Please have a read, it'll save having to type everything out. http://www.overclock.net/t/1348623/amd-bulldozer-and-piledriver-overclocking-guide-asus-motherboard The second post explains everything. Have a look at the recommended settings, the limits, and the process for how to overclock. It's quite universal, you don't really need one tailored to your motherboard.

Thank you mate, been doing some more oc, got to 4.5ghz but now having problems getting enough voltage to the cpu, the vdroop is bad, and with no llc on the gd80 v2 i dont kjow what else to do.
