I have a Q6600, with an ULTRA Chilltec cooler.
I overclocked the CPU to 3.2Ghz (vcore 1.325). But anywhere past 3Ghz the temps were hitting close to 80c after prolonged Prime95 test, and my idle temps were around 39/40c which also seemed high. I cleaned out the Cooler with some compressed air and it dropped down the Load temps by about 5c.
Last night I decided to change the thermal paste, I cleaned up CPU with vodka and put Arctic Silver 5. Afterwards I went straight to prime95, Idle temps were down by about 3c or so and prime95 was running at 70c for the first hour, then every hour afterwards the temps creeped up, i got to 78c after 7hours running, and when i turned off prime95 my idle temp dropped very slowly only to 46c which is higher than before.
Is the thermal paste application bad? since temps changed. It was difficult to install this cooler because it is so top large and heavy and I couldnt reach under it easily to install the screws (which meant i accidently moved it a little or tipped it slightly)
Should I take it apart again and redo the thermal paste?
or
Should I get my old zalman full copper cooler, which has a broken fan, replace the fan with a regular 90mm case fan (i can cut out the bracket and mount the fan with a couple of small screws on the cooler and the fans are roughly the same size).
