hey guys, im looking to overclock my fx8320. its currently at 3.5ghz and i was looking to get it close to 4ghz.
im very new to overclocking and wouldnt even know were to start so any advice would be a help. my current cpu has the stock cooler which it came with, would i be able to overclock with that or will i need to change it to a after market one?

cheers

Solution
it is jumpy because it is going down to a lower voltage and clockspeed to save power, while you are gaming, it should stay at 4ghz. well, let prime95 run for a little while longer, and if there are no errors, then your overclock is all good to go :D

these are my specs ;

Equipment: -FX8320 8 core 3.5ghz
-16gb Patriot Viper 1600mhz
-Gigabyte GA-78lmt-usb3
-R9 290 Sapphire Tri-X OC
-512gb Crucial mx100 ssd
-XFX Pro Core Edition 850watt 80+

ok, well, you can probly hit 4.0, aslong as the temps stay under 80c. go into the bios, and increase the multiplier to 20.0 and increase the voltage to 1.45, then try to boot. if it boots, run Prime95 for a while, and if there are no errors, then lower the voltage by 0.02, and repeat. if it wont boot from multiplier 20.0 and voltage 1.45, set the voltage back to default, and the multiplier to 18.0, it should boot, if so, run Prime95 for a while, if no errors, increase multiplier to 19.0 and increase voltage by 0.02. if it boots, run Prime95, if not, increase voltage by another 0.02. if it passes prime95, then raise multiplier to 20.0 and increase voltage by 0.02, if it doesnt boot, add another 0.02, up to a total voltage of 1.46.

Here is an example of my overclocked pc. Before i started i had a FSB (Front Side Bus) at 200mhz, my CPU (1090t black edition) had a multiplier set at x15, 200 x 15 = 3000, this means without any overclock my CPU is 3Ghz.

You can increase the FSB to get a higher CPU clock but this will also increase the speed of your memory, if you just want to increase your CPU, focus on the multiplier (AMD Black editions and Intel extreme editions have unlocked multipliers).

I would recommend an aftermarket cooler as things can get hot especially when you have such a high clock speed you need to increase your voltage.

ok so been in the bios, just want to double check before i change anything.... ive found the multiplier which is fine,
and i found a option which said cpu voltage control which im guessing is what i use. its set at 1.4250v at the moment. but i cant get it to go to 1.45v as the options for different voltages jump like this.. 1.4250 1.4450 1.4650 ect ect. jumps 200 a time..?

ok so ran it all on 19x and each core passed after 20mins or so. and that was a overclock of 3.733ghz from 3.5ghz so running it at 20x now.
how do i monitor how hot my cpu is getting? i just want to make sure its not too warm... cheers

another quick question lol ive downloaded speccy, ( thanks again ) and it says my ram is running at 803mhz, but my ram is 1600mhz, do i have to do something to change this so it runs better? cheers

also the cpu is running at 63degrees does this seem about right? this is im presuming under load as im running the prime95 as we speak?
