I'm ordering a laptop from exotic pc, but i'll be installing my own RAM, SSD, and OS.

I've seen ppl say that i can just buy 8.1 disk from windows directly and then go through the motions, yet when i go to the microsoft store it says that i have to have win7 or 8 before i can install 8.1?

Also, what are drivers and utility software?

Ok.
This is a link from amazon for a hard copy:

It seems to be the cheapest way to get the full version of windows 8.1 for $100.00

Windows 8.1 is an update. And if you already have Windows 8, it is a free update. You can buy the full version including 8.1 also. But if your laptop already has another windows platform on it, it is cheaper to upgrade than to buy the whole thing.

I guess you could get windows 7(same platform that windows 8 is running on) and upgrade to your 8.1 pro student. That would be around $120.00. There may be another way to do it, but that is what i found by searching. I am not an expert.

You dont need any OS installed to install Windows 8 or 8.1.
I would recommend to get windows 8 and then update to 8.1 since thats free.
But if you plan to get windows 8.1 pro student i would do that instead of what i've typed above.

But to conclude, you can just buy a hard copy or download it with a torrent, whatever you want, and install it, no other OS needs to be installed

There is no need to get 8, and then do the update to 8.1. You can buy copies of 8.1 already. It's the same price as buying 8, but you don't have to do any upgrading since you already have it.

And @ PCMasterRace98, advising anyone to download Windows or any other software illegally will get you banned very quickly. Windows cannot be obtained legally via BitTorrent. Please do not encourage this.

If you have not already done everything than I agree you should just buy the copy of Windows 8.1 from Amazon. As far as the drivers and utility software go, hopefully you might have received a disc with all of that with your computer. Unfortunately in most cases you just have to find and download them yourself. Once you get your computer you will need go on-line from another pc and go to the manufacturer's (Acer, Asus, HP, etc) support section of their website and put in the make and model then download all of the drivers and burn them to disc or put on a flash drive. Install Windows, load drivers, and let Windows get all of its updates.
