Hello,
I have a pc with the following specs: ASRock G41M-S3 motherboard, Intel Core2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20GHz cpu and 3gb of ram.

I recently bought a used Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 @ 2.66GHz. I installed it but when I turn on the pc, it freezes at random points during boot. It usually freezes during the Starting Windows screen and has never got past it (In safe mode, too). Also, sometimes it freezes even before the motherboard splash screen.

I have tried the cpu in my cousin's pc and it worked, so I guess it's not broken. In addition, when I put the old processor back on my pc, everything works fine. I have tried resetting and updating the BIOS with no result. Also, the cpu is detected by the motherboard, as I see in the BIOS settings, so I don't think there is a compatibility issue. Last thing I did was to format the hdd (using the old cpu) and perform a clean windows installation, but that didn't work too.

Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

Do a fresh OS install with the new CPU in the motherboard, not the old one.

Have you tried updating your bios? If not, then put your old chip back in and get the latest bios for your motherboard.

I looked at the CPU support list for his motherboard and it looks like all the CPUs that are supported are supported from the original bios version.

I tried to do a clean OS installation with the new CPU, but it freezes again before the installation starts
