I am building a new pc shortly and am having a hard time on deciding on which of the 2 choices to get. I live near a Microcenter so here are the links/prices:

Cpu's:
http://www.microcenter.com/site/products/amd_bundles.aspx <- Scroll down until you see the AMD FX 8320 with the MSI 970A-G46 AM3+ ATX mobo which comes together to cost $170.

http://www.microcenter.com/site/brands/intel-processor-bundles.aspx <- Scroll down until you see the Intel I5 4690k with the ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 LGA 1150 ATX mobo, which comes together to cost $290. (There is a $15 rebate on the Mobo)

Now the GPU's:
http://www.microcenter.com/product/416680/NVIDIA_GeForce_GTX_760_DirectCU_II_Overclocked_2048MB_GDDR5_PCIe_30_x16_Video_Card <- costs $230 (After rebate) which is $40 cheaper than the r9 280x

http://www.microcenter.com/product/432825/AMD_Radeon_R9-280X_Dual_Fan_3GB_GDDR5_PCIe_30x16_Video_Card <- Costs $270 (After rebate)

Note: All the other parts will be exactly the same so I did not bother posting them

Now the Totals:
I5 4690k/GTX 760: $751
FX 8320/R9 280x: $671

So, should I go with the weaker CPU with the stronger GPU or the Stronger CPU with the weaker GPU?

Which is most future proof?

Thank you for your time!

Wow, thanks for the insight! And I will be overclocking both the cpu and the gpu

r9 280x is always better than the 760 not only because of 1 gb extra vram but for other general features ......gtx 760 also comes with 4 gb vram ......r9 280x is comparable with gtx 770 and gtx 760 is comparable with r9 270x .....and choose the i5 i5 4790k with the r9 280x ....i5 is better for gaming than the amd fx 8350 because of much more strong single core performance....

I wish I could pair the I5 with the 280x, but that would make a almost $150 difference between the two builds. Not to mention I am on a VERY strict budget of $750. I would have to go penny pinching in the couches just for that extra dollar on the I5 build. :)

Isn't the 8320 just a underclocked 8350 with the same architecture and everything? All I have to do is just overclock it and it becomes a 8350. The one thing is, is the max overclock the same? As in can I still hit 5.2 ghz on the 8320 like most people do with the 8350?

Would I be able to hit 5.2 ghz with a 8350 or is the motherboard the only issue?

not totally the same the single core performance of 8320 is lower than the 8350 and 8350 comes with 4 gh clock speed and 8320 with 3.5 so more oc required on 8320 to match the 8350 oc level but then there is stability issues with high oc....the turbo clock speed of 8320 is also lower than 8350....
and to reach 5 ghz of clock speed by oc u will need a water cooler and by air u can reach up to 4.7 safely in 8350

Do you think the 8350 is worth the extra $40?

I've read your post and you're deciding weather you should go with a strong CPU w/weak GPU or Weak CPU w/Strong GPU?
My answer to you is, the Intel Devil's Canyon CPU along with that R9-280x.
Maybe doing some bit more look around can get you good prices.

$615 alone just for 3 parts? I have a budget of $750 total...

This is what I mean by the comments:

Nope :) But I would prefer them from microcenter as they are very cheap and close to me. But if you can find some amazing online deal then I'm all for it. :D

I've tried to configure a system for $750 with the parts you want and they all pass that budget. Looks like MicroCenter has the better deal.
Some build I just put together with the cheapest parts available

Interesting build, the only thing I would change is go with the FX 8320 for $21 more, which will give me a cpu/mobo combo with a full atx mobo for only $170. The other worry is will the cpu bottleneck the gpu of that magnitude?

EDIT: Did some research, no single gpu can bottleneck a FX 8320.
