So just recently Time Warner bumped up our cable price about 50 dollars, so we're leaving. An alternative my family has been looking at is using OTA. We'd like to be able to set up a desktop to use as a dvr for the channels. I'm not technology illiterate, but I don't know what sort of thing is needed for this sort of set up. Should I focus on having a better processor, or ram, or even graphics card? Or should I not even try this if it is too expensive. Any help would be much appreciated!

I would look here: http://www.mythtv.org/

EDITED:
CPU and Ram could be usefull, what are your system specs?
GPU makes no difference for recording TV, only for playback on your machine and modern integrated graphics plays blu-ray 1080p with no problems at all.

Solution
Building an OTA DVR system is fairly straight-forward. I'm currently using my computer to capture four OTA channels simultaneously (using two dual-tuner Hauppauge HVR-2250 tuner cards). You don't need a whole lot of processing power or RAM for a basic DVR system. A Pentium processor and 4GB of RAM would be plenty. If you fill out all the information in the *How to Ask for New Build or Upgrade Advice* sticky I can help you put together a system that would work well.
