Samsung 840 EVO - x1 500GB RAPID or x2 250GB RAID0?

Hi,

At the mo I have x2 500GB HDD's in RAID0 for my gaming library but plan on using an SSD instead.

Which setup would be better for gaming (I know there won't be any FPS increase, I'm talking about game data access, textures being loaded into RAM and/or VRAM etc)?

Samsung 840 EVO - x1 500GB RAPID or x2 250GB RAID0.

Well, 2 x 250GB is faster, but you have twice as much chance of losing all your data.
Having used both, I would probably stick with the simplicity of a single drive. SSDs in RAID0 is useful for increasing your benchmark scores, but not that much real world difference.

Thank you, I thought as much. 500GB it is then (it works out cheaper anyways...).

Also, I don't suppose you know this or not, does the latest version of Samsungs Magician Software allow RAPID mode to be enabled if the BIOS is set to RAID mode? I was thinking of keeping my current HDD RAID0 array as a storage drive and for older games I don't play as much or that won't really benefit from being on an SSD.

I understand that AHCI is part of RAID, but do SSD's run better under AHCI as opposed to RAID? My thinking being if I decide against using a RAID array now, I may want to in the future. Avoiding a fresh instsll of Windows would be good if possible.

Samsung Magician version 4.4 doesn't work me. I have an AMD motherboard/chipset with 2 HDD's in RAID-0, and a 840 EVO as my O/S.
I upgraded from 4.3 to 4.4 and RAPID mode would not work. I then completely uninstalled Samsung Magician, then installed 4.4 and RAPID still would not work. So I uninstalled 4.4 and went back to 4.3 so I could have RAPID working again.

You have an Intel motherboard/chipset so maybe it will work for you. Try it and see.
