My Seagate 500gb external hard disk is forced to be formatted. After I click cancel, it shows "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I try to use command "chkdsk /x or /f" but it shows "The type of the file system is RAW". How can I fix it?

Solution
Hi

Both WD and Seagate produce windows based hard disk diagnostics
Run a full scan and see if there are bad sectors or just corruption

Corruption may be fixed by chkdsk but if it fails bad sectors or some other physical damage is possible

How old is the drive?
Is there data on there which needs to be recovered?

Has drive been dropped or subject to vibration or shock while in use?

If seagate's diagnostic makes a temporary repair
Testdisk from www.cgsecurity.org may be able to repair the corruption allowing data recovery

Be prepared to replace hard disk, check if still under a Seagate warrantee
Especially if Seagate's diagnostics gives a failure to repair or dying hard disk error message
