Hi guys.

I was running an amd fx 8320 on an MSI board when all went dead.Seems as though it tries to power up for about a millisecond, cpu fan tries to turn but immediately quits , no other signs of power. after isolating the board and swapping out a known good PSU I came to the conclusion I had a dead mobo or cpu. Hoping for the lesser of two evils I ordered a replacement motherboard .I received an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0. This board powered up, cpu fan , LED on the board ect , but no signal to screen and no beep codes. After extensive research on here and other places , talking to local repair shops and talking to ASUS tech support, i`m left scratching my head. First off, I did go through all steps on this site for mobo diagnosis, isolated board down to PSU, 1 stick of ram, and cpu ect. still no beeps (had to go buy a mobo speaker as my case did not have one , I might ask that if someone asks me about no beep codes. ). Now here is the curious part. ASUS tech said if board is isolated down to CPU and 1 stick ram and no graphics card with a known good PSU and you get no beeps it is the CPU because the CPU is first in the POST chain. Sounds logical so I went to local pc repair place and they let me swap out the CPU with one of theirs. Still no beep. The tech there said try it with no CPU and it should beep . This goes against what the ASUS tech said ,but I figured I would try. Still no beep . This tech swears the mobo must be bad since no CPU and no beep. But again this is exact opposite of what the ASUS tech said. Not knowing what else to do I went ahead and RMA`d for a new ASUS board which I am now waiting for , but I cant help the feeling I will get the new board and have the same results. Does anyone here have any thoughts on this beep code with and without a CPU thing???? Sorry so long but I wanted to explain all I did thus far as to not waste anyone`s time with the basics.
Thanks,
Dave

first MSI motherboard has a bad MOSFET make short 12v to Ground.....if you want to repair it, change a mosfet to better one...
second...usually asus have a bios problem.. try to update from UFD with AMIBOOT.ROM ( download bios from asus web then change name AMIBOOT.ROM , hold ctrl+home at power on.

Hey Scout,
no, he did not mention it and I did not think of it. He actually just handed me a bunch of old AMD CPU`s and said try your luck. All I know is the board was supposed to be compatible with AMD FX series, as well as backward compatible with the athlon II and sempron CPU`s, I was able to find an Athlon II with the proper pin configuration to fit the socket (couldn`t tell which one , just a bare CPU ). Again , at this point I was just trying to get a beep, any beep , out of it but no success . This is when he said try it with no CPU (which i never heard of trying before and I have worked on my own pc`s for years) and I should here a beep. when that did not happened he said it`s definitely the mobo. Again that is opposite what the ASUS tech said. I asked him if the CPU I had at home was bad , could I have damaged the new board when I installed it and he said absolutely not. not enough voltage to do that. A friend of mine that is a tech but only works on intel systems said he is dead wrong , and if i plugged my bad CPU into the new board , I may have very well fried the new board. What are your thoughts on that?

OK getting a little above my knowledge level, had to go look up what mosfet was . scrapped the Msi board. I will have to look up how to flash the bios when the new ASUS board arrives. did not realize that was possible if the board wont post. but shouldn`t i at least still get a beep of some sort? also , keyboard lights do not flash on powerup as they do when normally going through POST.

so in other words dont pop in my existing cpu untill I can try another cpu on the board first? Unfortunately I am having trouble locating someone with one i can try. so far the one guy that I did find only had a box of unmarked athlon II`s which I also have no way of knowing if they were any good and he didn`t know. I will keep looking for someone who does.
