So I built a new computer a few days ago with i7-4790k. I'm using a Corsair H100i in a NZXT H440 case. I have a ASUS Maximus VII Hero (in-box BIOS, have not updated) and my CPU only runs at it's Turbo frequency for some odd reason. The temperature without the A/C on is 75F or 25C. According to HWMonitor, RealTemp, and Intel Extreme Tuning Utility my idle temps are 50C (too high for me.) According to AI Suite and the in-BIOS temp my CPU is idling at 40C (too high still.) Speedfan on the other hand is reporting 30-35C idle temps. Which one should I believe? All software is up to date. BIOS has no changed settings aside from XMP enabled. Also ANY stress test I run, brings my CPU close to TJ Max (100C.) I am really worried about this and would really like to figure out why my CPU is running too hot. I reapplied thermal paste with some Artic Silver 5 as well.
In addition, I know people who have 8350s at 4.4Ghz and 4790k's that idle in mid 20s lower 30s. Please help!

I'd update the BIOS and make sure you have the latest mobo drivers loaded, then see what it shows.....Also may have a faulty sensor, unusual but always possible

I will try updating the BIOS. I do have the drivers loaded up.

I have the same board and cpu (updated to current bios) with custom liquid. stock ran about 56 and 4.6 runs to throttle point under a stress test but never goes over 80C gaming or video encoding. so i must say these chips run real hot ( my old i7 930 at 4.5ghz and 1.38v ran cooler. I believe the difference is the die size. waste heat is just too concentrated perhaps you can compare my results. My idle temps are about 28-32C which is also normal
