will an i5-4690K be a good upgrade from an amd 1055T

hey everyone. i currently have a amd 1055T and it mostly handles everything i need except it isn't too good at single thread tasks, like playing kerbal space program. the i5-4690K seems to be the best cpu i can get within my price range, but i just want to make sure it will be a decent upgrade. would this be a worthwhile upgrade?

Intel's better than AMD because of its architecture, 22 nm vs 32 nm. You should get it.

Hope I helped!

no offence but its kinda obvious i would need a new motherboard. even if i got a new amd cpu i would need a new motherboard. i'm pretty sure i can reuse my ddr3 ram tho.

is a z97 motherboard good even if i never plan to run sli? i haven't looked into motherboards since i haven't decided on what cpu i want to get. i will definitely start looking at the z97 options. thank you for that starting point.

i'm not sure if i'm going to overclock, but i always like to have the option available which is why i went for the K version. it gets quite hot here in the summer (poorly insulated house) which doesn't help overclocking.

1, If you are going to OC, get a Z97 mobo.
2, If you do anything intensive, I'd recommend at least DDR3-1600 or 1866 RAM.
3, It's not really recommended to reuse RAM from one system to another because the RAM compatibility may vary.
4, Why not SLI/CF?
5, If you want a recommendation, I'd get the Gigabyte GA-Z97X Gaming 7. It's 170$ at Newegg.

As he wasn't sure about overclocking I assume he doesn't need an overclocking mainboard.

Some 100$ z97 mobo would suffice.
I'd definitely get z97 + k version, myself, because even if you don't overclock right now, you can still do later on. Plus, overclocking is really easy until like 4.4ghz which is a huge performance boost for almost free.

For free??? In order to overclock you need to buy a K-series processor, higher Wattage PSU, more expensive mobo, more expensive RAM, an after-market CPU cooler, and possibly better case cooling as well. So it's never, ever for free. You need to decide BEFORE you buy whether you wanna overclock

If he was to get the k version anyway, you can't add that cost. For overclocking to about 4.4ghz a good 500W psu is plenty, unless paired with a 780ti or alike. Z97 mobos are around 20€ more expensive than H97 ones. You don't need a 300€ one for basic overclocking, I don't think he wants to push it beyond 5ghz on ln2. An aftermarket cooler is another 20€ for the 212 evo. So afterall we're on 40-50€ cost for a boost of 20%. You don't need to change ram to overclock, no idea how you got onto that.

tons of great replies. i've been away for a couple days so i haven't had a change to check in.

i'm currently running the amd x6 1055T. cpuz says its 45nm which would make the 22nm i5 even more of an upgrade.
4x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1333.
corsair rm650 psu
nvidia 770 video card

i will definitely be getting an aftermarket cpu cooler, even if i choose not to overclock i like it to run quiet. if i do choose to overclock i won't be trying to max it out, i'm happy with a small but stable boost that i don't have to worry about crashing cuz it can get quite hot in my house in the summer (plus the cat hair). my current ram would probably hold me back the most, but that would have to be an upgrade for a later time. i've never cared to do sli because running at 1080p on high settings is good enough for me. i'm not going higher than 1080p for a while and its only at 60hz. in a couple years when the 770 isn't good enough i'll just get a newer card instead of another 770 to do sli.

i can't really see myself spending over $150 on a motherboard. over $150 usually gets into features that i won't be utilizing. i was thinking something like the ASRock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer for $125 on newegg.

You can use your old ram, psu and gpu. ;)
As for decent overclock the cooler master evo 212 should suffice.
As mainboard you can even look around in the 100$ range, there isn't really much need for more expensive ones on basic oc'ing.

I just recently upgraded from an AMD 1100t BE to an i7 4790k and the difference is pretty noticeable. The usual suspects like video encoding times have been less-than-halfed by the new CPU and more surprisingly, my boot times have also been made substantially shorter. I've always assumed my boot time was being bottlenecked by my SSD so it took my by surprise to have my system boot up in less than 10 seconds when it was running closer to 30 on my old 890 platform.

In retrospect, the Phenom II line is almost 5 years old now so getting a new Intel cpu is upgrading by leaps and bounds. Especially with all the fun new features the z97 chipset brings compared to what I was working with before.
