Hello all!

So, I am basically setting up a Hypervisor on top of a consumer grade motherboard (i7-4790k, GA-Z97N, 16GB DDR3) for fun at home.

I got everything set up for a Raid-5 array. 6x1TB Seagate 7200. The status of the array is 'Initializing' which I realize is typical, however it is not recognized as a single 'drive' by XenServer at install, and when I try installing XenServer the array becomes "degraded". I have a few questions:

1. Is it possible to initialize a RAID-5 array without an OS?
2. Is it possible to initialize a RAID-5 array with XenServer?
3. Will initializing the array in another OS, and then installing a different OS work? (i.e. install windows 8, then wipe the disks and install XenServer).

Thanks for any help!

Solution
You could try the solution outlined here: http://blog.codeaddict.org/2011/12/04/xenserver-6-0-software-raid1-installation/

But you should note that that is for RAID 1; it may not work for RAID 5. I still think that you can't use the onboard RAID in this way. Let us know if you find a working solution as it's a question a lot of people ask.
