Problem with reinstalling windows 7

I purchased a used laptop recently, an HP Pavilion dm4 with Windows 7 installed. Everything was working fine and it was fast but one day when I tried to turn it on it sent me to the windows error screen, to choose between starting windows normally or to launch startup repair. When I start windows normally it gives me the blue screen and when I start the startup repair it keeps on loading, nothing pops up, it just keeps on loading. I have the HP Quickweb on the computer and it runs it fine but everytime I try to reinstall Windows 7 it freezes on the 'Setup is Starting' screen.

Is there something wrong with the hard drive or any other hardware? I haven't formatted the hard drive because of the files in the hard drive. If I have to format the hard drive I'll do I just want someone with experience to tell me what to do

I did use it twice and it said the test failed both times.

It appears to be telling you that the drive is dead or dying.

Even if the computer was originally purchased online in 2011? It's a Toshiba 600gb hdd
If it is dying, is there a way to transfer the contents to an ssd?

To transfer data, it must be able to be read.
If the drive is dying, it mostly can't be read. If it is actually dead, it can't be read at all.

Seeing as this is a used laptop, there is no way to know how the previous owner treated it. Did he drop it?
