So I just got a Lenovo T440s today and a samsund 840 EVO. I used the data migrating tool to transfer everything from the the HDD to the SSD. Then I deactivated the internal battery like you are supposed to do, opened the laptop and installed the SSD. I am 100% sure it is installed correctly but when I turn the laptop on I get an error saying:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3. Click "Repair your computer."

I think this has something to do with Microsoft 7. Like it's not possible to just clone the OS like every other file. The computer came with Microsoft 7 installed but no discs. So how do I setup the OS on the SSD. I'm not really good with computers by the way so please explain as simply as you can if possible :) . I don't know how to format a disc and don't know how to use .iso files to give you an example.

Did you use the program from the CD that ships with the SSD or did you D/L the latest version from Samsung's site?

I would put the hdd back in and then use thier utility to make your Factory Restore USB or Disk set. You WILL need that sooner or later.

Hopefully later <grin>

Yes thats exactly what I did because I don't have a CD-drive. If I had an external cd-drive and a windows 8.1 copy could I then just put the windows disc in when I see the error message and install it?

What do you mean? I have my HDD in now and it works fine so why do I need to factory reset it? Nothing on it beside the programs that came with the computer and the data migration tool.

Could I maybe use this program here : http://wudt.codeplex.com/ and use it to install Windows 7 on the new SSD? I saw this program recommended in an article about SSD installment but I don't fully understand this pragraph here from the website:

"The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD. "

So this program creates an .iso file with my Windows 7 on it when I download it on my computer with my old HDD in it. Then I put the SSD in and take out my old drive, boot the computer up, get the error message and then I can just insert a USB flash drive with the iso file on it and set up Windows 7. Am I understanding this correctly?

You're leaving out some important steps:

Quote:
This tool allows you to create a copy of the ISO file to a USB flash drive or a DVD. To install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive or DVD, all you need to do is insert the USB flash drive into your USB port or insert your DVD into your DVD drive and run Setup.exe from the root folder on the drive.

Note: You cannot install Windows 7 from the ISO file until you copy it to a USB flash drive or DVD with the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool and install from there.

So, run the "Setup" program before you remove your old HDD. This will expand the necessary files and make your flash drive or DVD bootable. Then, shut down, disconnect the old HDD and install the new SSD. Reboot from the flash drive or DVD and install Windows on the SSD.
