Low profile RAM?

Hi guys,

I need help with choosing the best low-profile RAM for a gaming PC that I'm building for my friend. He said that he didn't want to go on water and decided to cool his CPU using a heatsink instead. I was planning on using the bequiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 heatsink. Money isn't the biggest issue but I want something that's at least 1866 MHz and has a CAS of below 10. Basically what RAM should I use for this massive heatsink that's low profile enough for clearance? Also, the shop near my place is now selling Corsair Vengeance Pro RAM for 25% off, are those massive heat spreaders removable? Will I void the warranty or damage the memory?

Thanks,
Ryan :)

Solution
Cutting the heat spreaders will be an issue for sure. Not that I think the ram runs THAT hot.

Now depending on the board memory slot locations sometimes the 2 furthest slots will take taller ram without issues. Please see the boards manual to ensure the board can run this way.

You may also be able to reverse the fans on that cooler and mount it the other way(or just move the first fan to the other side if the clip/heatsink supports it). This would have no fan on the memory side. This would work if the fan is the only part in the way.

The gskill ripjaws would fit, but has to be installed before the cooler.

nukemaster,

Thanks for your response :) It's a Maximus Hero VII. I'll check the Mobo manual.

SwordKD,

That's indeed very low profile but if I overclock my RAM, will I have any issues about the RAM not lasting as long or overheating? Thanks :)

just OC it up .. very easy on these .. i have them ... OC to 1866
( i learn from googling .. haven't try to tweak because run great so far)

this ram also rate for 1.5 volt .. that what CPUZ said in it SPD

in bios .. i change the frequency to 1866
change the timing to 9-10-10-27
volt = 1.5

that all ... no big mess at all .. these ram are running great.. i have 2x8 ... thinking to add another 16 because soon i be do some video editting

Thanks godto :) I'll consider these memory and other options.

Could also possibly opt for an AiO water cooler as well. The Nzxt Kraken x60 has gotten very good reviews and should fit in your case. There are other options of course.

However, you have one of the best heatsink/fan coolers picked out at a great price too, so up to you. If only you could get black Noctua fans. They are out there, but everywhere I've seen is sold out and I haven't seen any in stock for a long time.

The grey noctua fans belong in the Redux series and they are typically cheaper and use previous technology. Also they are a little expensive and as I said earlier, my friend was paranoid that his AiO was gonna leak (even when I told him it was not gonna leak but still...) so I gotta stick wif a heatsink solution which if you want a good one means high profile = require low profile RAM sticks.
