Video Disappeared While Installing Windows

I've put together a cheap build comprised of sale/open box items and parts from an old build I had laying around. Once assembled everything seemed to work just fine. I popped in the windows install disc and it was going smoothly for awhile. It worked through the checklist of copying and expanding windows files, installing windows and its features. Then it said it would restart in a few seconds. After the monitor went blank from it restarting, the monitor showed "no signal". I could hear the dvd drive making noise, and noticed the hdd light was going as well. This lasted for a few minutes and then stopped. I have tried all three ports on the video card on three different monitors with no success. If I try and shut down the computer, it is completely unresponsive after turning back on. If I leave it alone for 24 hours and turn it on again it is just fine. I try and install windows and the process repeats. I'm at a total loss as to what I should do. I have checked the video card in my current system. The HDD is also from my current system and was in use just a few days ago.

mobo: gigabyte p35 (from old build)
cpu: intel core 2 quad (from old build)
ram: 8gb gskill ddr2 (from old build)
psu: thermaltake 350w (open box item)
hdd: seagate 250gb (taken from current build)
generic dvdrw (sale item)
evga 8400 gs video card (sale item)
thermaltake v3 case (sale item)
basic logitech kb/mouse

It's possible the CPU is overheating, the system prevents turning on to protect the hardware, and after letting it off it cools down so it works again until overheating again...

let it rest for a while, then turn on pc and enter BIOS and look for a few min if CPU temp rises non stop, usually there's a "monitor" or "health pc status" section in BIOS where you can monitor it's temps.

Update: I turned off the computer and turned off the main power switch on the PSU as well. After leaving it for about 20 minutes and coming back I tried starting it up. It came up with the options of safe mode or starting normally. I chose to start normally and it finished setting up windows and went to the desktop. I decided to turn it off and on again to see what would happen. It was, of course, unresponsive after attempting to restart. I will wait another half hour and do as you suggest and report my findings.

So, I let it set for about a half hour and turned it back on. I went into the BIOS and monitored the system/cpu temps. They started at about 30ish each and rose slowly. However, after about two minutes, I started getting an odd graphical error. It continually got worse until I couldn't make out anything on the BIOS screen. I was still able to navigate it, and exited BIOS and started windows without any problems. I did notice though that the screen right before windows loading screen also had the same type of error on it. I took a picture of the error but I'm not sure how to share it.

Okay, I've just purchased it a few days ago. So I'll go return it tomorrow after work.

edit: I did test the gpu in my current system briefly and windows booted up okay. I will test it again in my system before I return it to make sure it really is defective (only because the store I buy parts from is 20 mins away and this will make the 3rd trip in 2 weeks, so I need to be sure).
