How bad is it not to use thermal paste?

I recently installed a corsair h80i on my AMD 8350 but during the process of removing the original cooler the pins on the cpu were bent. Through alot of careful tweaking i was able to straighten around 20 pins on the cpu and able to finally boot the system after 4 hours of work. I had to remove the thermal compound that had been applied to the liquid cooling square in order to fix the processor. I really dont want to risk breaking my processor again. How much do i need thermal compound on the processor?

Actually less paste is better. Purpose of thermal paste is to make connection and transfer heat between plate on cpu and plate on cooler. If there is thick layer it diminish transfer of heat, ofc if there are spots with no paste at all, that may be problem.
If you run stress test and it got right temperatures maybe you dont need to mess with it more. Watch your temperatures carefully and have faith in fail safe mechanisms for overheating :), if your PC starts shutting down during load you will know that you need to replace paste.

Yeah, its running without paste at around 35 c i honestly don't feel the need to mess with it further. By no paste i mean there is some but the paste is layered pretty thin over the block.

i mean like a miniscus on top of water small amount, im running stress tests and its hovering around 55 c under max load. I might go get the paste from a local store but i just need to know if 55 c and under is ok under max load (prime 95). Otherwise its fine i really don't feel like fixing more bent pins as that took sever al hours and almost cost the processor its life.
