Requirements and considerations:

Must support Tomato firmware and be able to setup a VPN server. I have never tried running tomato or setting up a VPN server, but it dosnt sound that difficult.

AC WIFI would be nice, but not a deal breaker

The WIFI signal strength is not really important, I live in a small apartment and my main PC is on a wired connection. The WIFI is only used for mobile, tablet and chromecast.

I have a 50 Mbit internet connect, but I might upgrade to 250 Mbit in the near future.

I often have p2p programs running in the background and I use my PC as a Plex server, both over the local network, but also over the internet.

I dont have a fixed budget, but the cheaper the better, im thinking somewhere in the $50 to $200 range.

What should I look for?

The Netgear R7000 is a very popular AC router on many levels. First off is its performance. Very fast speed due to a dual core 1ghz cpu. Most powerful radios for the greatest range. And highly flexible. Not sure about Tomato but DDRT is heavily supported in the R7000. I tried it in mine but seemed overkill so I went back to stock firmware. The router is very stable and very good. It really rocks.

The unit lists for $199 but is often on sale in the $180 range. Here is a review I wrote and a very long thread of user comments. This thread started when it was introduced around the 1st of the year.
