Im sure this question has been asking a million times, but how does one limit the bandwidth usage of his idiotic room mates who stream netflix day / night and even while they sleep. I cant even game anymore and im frustrated beyond belief.

i have a netgear wndr3400v2 and i have QoS turned on by using mac addresses to turn theirs down to low, mine high and still i suffer. any ideas?

Solution
QoS on that router like many is a bunch of fancy screens that do nothing of value other than let them put QoS in the feature list.

This router can only control outbound...ie upload bandwidth. The problem you are having is download. Some very advanced forms of QoS can "try" to affect download speeds by restricting upload speeds but it tends to be very application specific. A over simplistic example but how much can you limit "netflix send me a high def movie" and then watch for hours using bandwidth. Your router does not even have that ability since it requires you to be able to set rates not some stupid high, medium low that means nothing.

The only way you can do this is to get a router that can hard limit the download speed and...

The only way you can do this is to get a router that can hard limit the download speed and even that is a cheat because what it is really doing is throwing away traffic that has already used up your download limit hoping the application will detect it and slow down. Netflix generally responds well to that so you are in luck.

You will need to find third party firmware that support the setting of fixed values for download bandwidth. dd-wrt and tomato do but your router is one of those that it depends on which hardware version so be very careful reading the details to be sure you get the exact file you need. You can end up with a dead router pretty easy by load the wrong firmware.

After you get this what you do is match everyone except you and limit them to some value. Say you have 10m and your game need 2m you would limit everyone else to say 7m. You need to allow some extra it does not really limit that exactly. The big issue with doing this is the other users are limited to 7m even if you are not using the other for your game.
