So my AMD Athlon CPU is overheating. I talked to a friend and said it's because the stock fan is probably bad. He said he'll install a new one for me.

What would be a good fan?

Sorry for lack of details if you need more, let me know. It is a desktop also.

The thing is my CPU fan doesn't run until it hits 70C. I've used speed fan and went in to BIOS, there is nothing to change CPU fan speed. Can you help me change the minimum speed? Speed fan shows the fan but upping the % does nothing. There is nothing in bios for fans.

Solution
A good cooler, which consists of a heatsink and a fan, is practically any cooler that keeps your temps in order, while not being louder than you prefer. Since this one is likely done for, any replacement will likely be better. A good recommendation these days is CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO or 212X.

Prior to changing the Stock Heatsink fan make sure the fan is working and that you have cleaned the inside of the system of any dirt and dust using a can of compressed air. AMD heatsinks and fans are usually of decent quality unless the fan stopped working. But otherwise the coolermaster 212 evo is really good if your case is big enough to hold it.

Where are you getting the temperatures from and what CPU is it?
