Hello. So I need a solution to get internet on my desktop. I'm primarily going to be using it for gaming, game downloads, and browsing. I'm struggling on finding a cheap adapter and I'm not sure what's better entirely. Powerline adapters, usb wi-fi or pci-e wi-fi all have iffy reviews. I don't really want the solution to exceed $40. And I cannot use an ethernet solution (Powerline adapters being an exception) since I don't want cords through my apartment. So let me know of any cheap, but stable, internet solutions please? Thank you!

The "iffiness" of wireless is usually somewhat exaggerated. I've been gaming without issue on an ASUS N15 W/L card since I made my build without much issue.

Powerline may work, but keep in mind it can be adversely affected by the number of things using the same lining, and furthermore, there has to be a meaningful connection within your apartment's electrical grid for it to work.

I'd simply suggest a wireless solution, since I've heard powerline can be somewhat dubious.

Your laptop doesn't have built in WiFi? What model laptop do you have? Not sure why I thought you had a laptop...

I agree with Canadian, you should go with wireless. I'm using a powerline because it's my best choice for my situation, but the devices didn't work in my previous home. Also if you're in an apartment, wireless is probably not going to have connectivity issues as long as you go for at least Wireless N.
