Hey guys, looking for opinions on this issue my system is as follows:
intel DX58SO motherboard (think i've had it for 5 years)
i7 920 @ stock speeds (think i've had it for 5 years)
corsair vengeance 1600mhz triple channel 12gb memory (new)
coolermaster v750 single rail psu (new)
gigabyte r290x reference graphics card (6months old)
samsung ssd (new)
windows 8.1

Ok, so this machine was ticking along fine with a gtx 260 or something for a few years, I bought a gtx 770 and had constant dx device hung errors unless it was underclocked, rma'd that and got a new one which i had the same issues with but even more frequent. Supposedly it tested ok but was given a refund in the end. I bought a 290x and the system was much more stable but I think this is when I started getting strange restarts and bsods which referenced the ati driver.

Since then I have upgraded the memory, installed an ssd and recently upgraded the psu as i thought maybe my 5 year old 550w psu wasn't up to the task. I'm still having the same issues and they seem to be getting worse, the 290x has always had a bit of coil whine but sometimes it seems louder and the ticks slow down with the frame rate when loaded up and this is when it either freezes for a few seconds, bsod's or restarts. This usual happens soon after a cold start and then when the pc turns back on it seems to be able to run fine for a whole day or until the next cold start. Youtube etc also triggers the crash sometimes.

So it seems like its the gpu but is it likely to actually be the cpu/mb? Especially as I had similar issues with 2 different 770's? I have also tested the memory and tried swapping it out with my 6gb corsair setup.

Certainly the gpu, psu and the ram have to be ruled out since you changed them and you still have issues.
Check if there is any update for your bios. If problem persists i would point the mb as the vilain of your problems.

Yes the MB is my main suspect, just the way it happens seems like it could be gpu related. I've been thinking about upgrading cpu and mb for awhile but the old i7 still goes well when it goes.
