Gotta ask something I got Intel Pentium (R) Dual Core Cpu w/ 1 320GB Hdd (Blue Caviar, idk if it matters) and got 4Gb Ramx2 and a 220W PSU. MY desktop is an ACER Asire x1800 E5200. Will it do any good on a GT630?

- Having an Acer desktop^ basically makes its PSU branded right? It is confusing me because some people says that a branded PSU is better than the generic ones, of course but can it ran a gddr3 or gddr5 slightly above its said wattage?

PS: My CPU got no other FAN aside from the fan in the HEATSINK beneath the processor.

You should *never* even think about running any PSU "slightly above" it's rated wattage. In fact, you should always strive to have a healty headroom of more wattage than what your components need.

The power supply in the Acer is not branded like Seasonic or XFX, or Corsair. In fact, I'm willing to bet it's a rather crappy, generic power supply they stick in there. 220W is very low.

Most low-end power supplies cannot even deliver their rated power - the intake power is reduced in the process of providing the output power by the power factor of the PSU - high-end Gold or Platinum PSUs are very efficient, unclassified PSUs are usually very inefficient.

There's a video doing the rounds of Corsair testing 6 unbranded 450W PSUs from one...

There's a video doing the rounds of Corsair testing 6 unbranded 450W PSUs from one vendor and all of them went up in smoke or flames at about 377W.

I agree 100% - but wanted to add a bit of justification around the headroom. All PSUs will degrade in their ability to put out the power that they were rated at when they were new - Quality PSUs have less degradation than generics. The additional headroom allows for simpler upgrades and longer usable lifespan.

There is a recent article about who's who in PSUs (who makes what.) Please read it and look for quality manufactuers such as Seasonic, Zippy and FSP in your consideration for a new PSU.

A very helpful thread indeed. Thanks.
