Hi all. Had some help from a wonderful friendly member yesterday re my xfx 4gb 290 double dissapation black edition gpu

It was running about 85c yeste and today bumped up to 88c max. thats pretty warm to my knowledge. He said when it hit 90-95 is when i should worry. Anyways so i was pondering into liquid cooling

Whats ppls thought on the nzxt g10 bracket + using a corsair h55? Surely it couldnt be worse than the stock 2x fan cooler on there at the moment?

Hover over my picture; I've got that exact cooling pair! Ask me any question about it and overclocking you'd like.

As for my thought...I love it. Go for it. It's a fairly inexpensive, great way to cool the r9 290. But in addition, but 2 packs of 8-piece copper heatsinks and the Gelid Icy Vision R9 290 VRM cooling kit. I've had great temps, and it looks like a beauty.

I idle in the 40c's, and while becnhmarking or gaming, I've never hit 90 or above. And that's with some OCing.

EDIT:

Both of the above come with thermal adhesive tape, and it's non-perm. So no need to buy tape/glue.

Thanks for the fast reply. I did have a look at those gelid kits previously, so are you saying you can have a gelid kit and the liquid cooling? Unfortunately im on my phone so cant see the photos but will look next time im on my pc.

My idle is about 35c (keeping in mind this system is only a few days old so im aure temps will rise with age) and underload (3 screen eyefinity, sniper elite 3 on medium-high detail) i was hitting 88c

so do you think it would be worth it considering my temps seem similar to yours.

Im super happy with the h60 i have on my 4790k. It never goes above 45c thats why i want liquid cooling - if itll make a difference

Again, Thanks heaps for your help :)

Sorry i think i mistook the gelid idea. I was looking at the gelid vision vga coolers yesterday. Pretty much a dual fan aftermarket gpu cooler. So correct me if im wrong but water cool it and then add the heat sinks AS WELL for better heat distribution

Right, the Gelid kit doesn't have to be used with the Icy Vision cooler. You got it right, no worries! haha

As for it being worth it...hmmm. Well, it DOES eat up 3 Fan connectors by itself, which is how many a motherboard typically has. 1 for the kraken's fan; 1 for the H55; 1 for the H55's radiator fan. So there's that speed bump.

But, I would say that during average gaming, I rarely reach over 79c. I've only gone over while playing Company of Heroes 2 for hours on end, and using Unigine's benchmarks for a long while. And at that, my case only has 2 case fans, so your setup might be cooler with the same Kraken/H55. Also, I'm OC'd to 1000mhz core, 1300mhz memory 24/7.

So, is $115~ worth 10c during gaming? Maybe, it's up to you. Would I? Probably not...your stock aftermarket cooler seems fine. But hey, you'd be able to boast some water in your rig! haha

Hello! I'm also planning on watercooling my GPU, may I know how many slots does the Kraken + H55 take?

Here's some insight/images on how large the end product is:

It takes up two slots for me, but it'll vary from motherboard to motherboard, I believe.

Thanks mate,

I think i might do it. Im in aus so finding the parts will probs be $150-$170

But i have a nzxt h440 case and it currently has three fans on the front three on the top and one on the back so i think that urs is running a lot cooler in comparison.

The case has a built in fan controller so not worried about fan port availability.

And like you said... Boasting rights :p

You've been great at answering. Thanks a million!!!

still contemplating the liquid cooling ~ took the side window off my h440 and the gpu ran at 76max down from hitting 89c yesterday. would that suggest despite having all the fans that i can, that im still not cooling enough....

currently its winter... what happens in summer when room temp hits 35c-40c

Where are you at when it's winter in july?

What's your case's airflow config? I have a pull in the front, pull through the Hyper 212, and it's pushed out the rear, through my Kraken/h55's radiator. No top or side fans. Perhaps you're not getting enough intake or exhaust

I have just installed an R9 290X using a kraken G10 and a Zalman LQ320. It is all second hand kit.

Getting the reference cooler off and the Kraken on was pretty straightforward. I did buy some radiator fixings etc and mounted the radiator out the back of my case.

I bought the Gelid kit from China and it came within 12 days but i have yet to fix that.

IN BF4 I typically run around 70C the VRMs get up to around 80. The drop in noise is bliss and should be one of the main reasons you consider this mod.

I am gaming Eyefinity at 5000 ish 1080 rez.

I have bought a second card and second G10 bracket and cooler Corsair H90 this time. another Gelid is on the way too. I am thinking of trying to mount that in 4 5.25 front drive bays but it may end out the back (my case is a mid tower with a full drive cage and I havent got a Dremel etc to chop bits off the case).

i have some memory heatsinks but i dont think I am going to bother fitting them as i may want to refit the stock coolers and sell the cards at some popint and I understand memory cooling isn't going to be a main concern. I also dont want to be dealing with heatsinks dropping off onto my motherboard for no or minimal gain.

I would say go for it IF you don't have a good non reference cooled version available to you at a reasonable price, or you just want the novelty of water cooling.

I will soon find out how much fun it is with two of these in crossfire with all the fans and radiators etc ....the Gelid kits will go on too and i'll no doubt get down to some moderate overclocking.

OK second card is in now and fitted with a G10 and a Corsair H90 with a 14cm noctua fan and positioned in 4 5.25 drive bays.

This card is GPU 1 and is running at 52 degrees after benchmarking Valley on eyefinity resolution Ultra settings 2XAA.

The other card .. now GPU 2 and fitted with a G10 and a zalman LQ320 with externally fitted radiator and a push fan (noctua 12cm fan) is running at 10-12 degrees hotter at 62-64 degrees.

I had a lot of problems with drivers and stuttering in crossfire but that's largely settled down.

My Kraken G10 came missing 2 GPU screws that attach the backplate to the bracket..and had to fit with only 2 .. replacements on the way..
I fitted the Gelid VRM 1 and 2 .. not really seen any difference in VRM temps -- if anything they appear to have gone up fitting the kit (but may be due to GPUZ having problems reporting the data on the second card -- data appears blank or disappears in a few secs)

From my limited experience Id go for the 140mm radiator of the H90 over any 120mm one. Dont bother buying the Gelid kit unless you find your VRMS running very hot. Make sure you have fan control options as they make a massive difference to noise because you obviously dont want bracket fan and radiator fans running at 100% when your cards are idle.
