New GPU - continuous POST beeps after inserting 4 pin PCI to mobo

Hi there,

I recently installed a new GPU to which I it did not display anything to my monitor. I was advised to remove everything from my mobo and reseat the CMOS battery, which I did. Now, when I power up my PC I get a continuous beep, however the beeping stops if I power up my PC without the 4 pin PCI connector to my motherboard. Does this just mean my PSU is faulty? It has worked fine for months right up until I tried this.

Thanks.

It's just a continuous beep, no discernible pattern.

Sorry, I may not have been clear in my original post. The continuous beep begins when the 4 pin is plugged in to the motherboard (the GPU isn't in the PC when this happens)

OK, I'm with you now.

In that case, I'd say that the PSU isn't delivering sufficient power to the GPU. The CX500 only delivers 408W on the +12V rail, which the GPU uses. However, the minimum wattage for the R9 270X is 500W. Granted, manufacturers always overstate their power requirements because there are a lot of crappy, no-name PSUs on the market, but a 92W discrepency is fairly large. The fact that your computer boots just fine without the 6-pin PCI connector definitely points the finger at the PSU.

But the GPU isn't in when the beeping is happening.

My mistake, I've interpreted that incorrectly.

The 4-pin connector is for the 12V rail, so something on that is causing the problem. With the 4-pin connector disconnected, can you get into BIOS? If so, check that the processor, disk drives and RAM are recognised correctly. If you spot any discrepencies, you've probably found the cause.

Update: No more continuous beeping, just the regular one short beep (which usually happens). The problem now is that I have no display to my monitor. My GPU is getting power hence the fans spinning, I tested the cable on a different system and it worked fine. Any idea what's going on?

I know I am coming back to this late.. But depending on your mobo, usually 1 short beep is no cpu. Don't fret completely, with the issues you are having with power the taxing of the psu when you initially installed the new gpu could have damaged the psu. Luckily corsair is pretty good with rma's. Just don't tell them you overburdened it.
