no you shouldn't, z97 was designed for devils canyon and haswell refresh, so only z87 motherboards should need bios updates.
Some z97 motherboards need a bios update in order to function properly with the i7 4790k. As the i7 4790 came out before the z97 boards, it should be supported, though.

Oh, forgot to mention. You can easily research that on the manufacturer's website. On the page of the mainboard, there should somewhere be a note about it's compability to cpu's. At least there was for my Gigabyte motherboard.
