Experts, I'm in need of help.

I've got an old (about 10 years) laptop that I still use to type on. I have a new desktop, though.

So, I'm trying to give my old laptop a bit of a new lease on life and bought some memory and a new CPU. As I need to upgrade the BIOS, I needed to clear the CMOS. Well, I have absolutely no clue where the jumper pins or dipswitches are! This is an 855GM Intel MoBo. I've got the entire thing stripped down completely. The computer itself is a ACER Travelmate 290. I've also heard that some older systems require a jumpwire between two solders - again no idea where these are.

I have searched endlessly on google to see if someone, somewhere has more information on this and I even looked at the very lengthy pdf file on the chipset, but can make neither heads nor tails of that stuff.

Is there anyone that has a clue more than me (I have none!)

Many thanks in advance.

The computer will not start. It powers on, the fan starts, but turns off after about 3 seconds and the computer does nothing. It does not power down, just stays on with a black screen. When initially placing in the new memory and CPU, this happened. I put the old parts back in, but still nothing. I spoke with the company I purchased the memory and CPU from, and I learned I should have upgraded the BIOS first. Since the computer is not booting-up, the suggestion was to clear the CMOS and re-install the old memory and CPU, then update the BIOS, the install the new parts.

Do you can access to the BIOS menu?

I guess that one of this is the new CPU that you are tying to install right?
