What are nice brands to buy from to make sure I choose a good one.

What I'm most afraid of with getting an SSD is it dying aafter i transfer my os to it so can I have my os saved on an external hard drive or something?

By doing that does that mean I can basically transfer the os to a new new hard drive assuming this one completely breaks and won't work anymore?

Thanks for any help, maybe I'm just overly paranoid lol

Don't' just get a SSD, and no I wouldn't recommend trying to 'transfer' what you have setup now, it would be EASIEST (yes take my word for it! OMG!!!) to just do CLEAN. What everyone does is, takes the current HDD and makes it the storage for files and programs (like STEAM) and only put the OS and essentials on the SSD. So your running two drives, the problem that comes along is if you DO NOT PAY ATTENTION when installing software. You need to NOT "CLICK THROUGH" the prompts, but slowly go through each and when you get to the one that says something like INTALL PATH C:\Program Files{x86}\This program\ your just change the C: to a D: and leave the rest. Again ONLY when INSTALLING OR UPDATING programs this would be the EASIEST way to NOT fill your small SSD

Now wait "what about the way I got it I like it the way it is?!!!". Simple answer, UNLESS THIS IS WIN 8.1 , all you need to do is click the ORB in bottom left, type in Windows Easy Transfer, plug in a external DRIVE (not the SSD) to the USB and backup your settings, wallpaper, etc. the 'way I got it setup'. Then get out all the CDs of the programs (like Windows, Office, etc.) and download and make a DBAN CD. Wipe the HDD (this will ensure it doesn't 'conflict' on 'where' the OS is stored). Install the SSD, enter BIOS and set the SSD as the primary boot drive. Insert Windows, set to install to the SSD. Then do all the Windows updates (about 200). Download and run Slim Drivers to make sure you have all the latest drivers. Goto www.FileHippo.com downbload and install the latest Malwarebytes, then download and install either AVG, Comodo or Panda Antivirus (all free). Install all your applications (again NOTE to make sure to SLOWLY go through prompts and change them to install on D:). Then plug in ext drive, run Windows Easy Transfer, restore your data and DONE!
