which would be better for me? z97 g45 or ASUS MAXIMUS VII?

Definitely the Asus if you can spend the extra bucks. More features, better reliability, well made, and not to mention gorgeous. MSI is meh in the motherboards IMO, I have an MSI micro atx board that was being really screwy the first few weeks I had it, but some random troubleshooting somehow fixed it. Good luck!

you will be better off with a h97 board as your cpu can't overclock, but you will be better off with a maximus VII range, even the ranger is one of the best z97 out there and that's the lowest one you can get on the series

True, if you aren't overclocking it is best to get an H97 motherboard otherwise the Maximus VII ranger because the majority of features improved on the HERO are just the better overclocking capabilities. Pick up the RANGER, IMO it is probably one of the best choices for the non-overclockers but MSI isn't half as bad either. I'd say go with ASUS, they usually make more quality and reliable motherboards with amazing features.
