Drivers affect Overclocking Capability??!

I have an AMD r9 290 and I remember well that my card could be overclocked to 1100/1500 without it showing artifacts or instability signs.

Then the new 14.x drivers showed up and I updated the driver.

Now I cant even oc the core to even 1060 due to unstable signs like artifacts.
Can the driver be the cause of it? Or there are other factors that could cause it? Help!

Solution
Having issues with beta drivers is to be expected. Did you try the 14.4 released drivers before using the beta?

Power should be good (excellent PSU). Temps appear to be okay as well.

Whoa thats quick lol
Here are the specs:
I7 960 oc'ed to 4.1 Ghz
Noctua Nh-u14s
6gb RAM
His r9 290 iceqx2
Asus rampage iii formula x58
Seasonic 750w modular 80+

Been over 4 years old the rig except the gpu and cooler.
Cpu is overclocked and stable with normal temp (60-75 on load), max 80ish on prime95

Right now still using the amd 14.7 beta
beta driver. Havent tried to install previous drivers as amd's driver is a bit pain to work and I'm lazy :p

I always use Msi afterburner and havent tried other apps though. May try sapphire's tri-x tomorrow

Oh and I notice some temperature increase on gpu by 4-5 degrees celcius at load but still 75ish

Havent tried the overdrive.
Will try it tomorrow and I also heard some complaints about bad performance and big temperature increase for some users with recent amd drivers. Maybe thats the real culprit
Thanks for the effort, will update the results soon!

As with all things in the OC world, your "mileage will vary" from system to system. And user to user.

I always suggest increasing OC tweaks in baby steps. Make small adjustments upward, save, and test. If 100000% stable (well 100%), then try inching up again. Rinse. Repeat. Stop and revert to previous settings once issues start cropping up. Also, keep track of what you change as you go along.

Standing by. We are here 24/7. Good luck!

I've installed driver 13.12. I decided to try 13.10 first but somehow it wouldnt complete the installation, "package driver failed". Don't know what the cause is but the important thing is it worked.
Now I'm able to overclock at 1100/1500 with +50mv. My card isnt a great overclocker too bad but it will run any game I throw at it!
I tried AMD Overdrive and now I'm using Sapphire's Trixx software and runs pretty great. Haven't tried the card to its limit and I will anytime soon

One more question if I may, What does aux voltage is really for in MSI Afterburner? Google doesnt seem to provide clear answer for me.
Does it help improve stability or is it pretty risky to play with it?

That setting allows you to tweak the aux voltage setting on the GPU. Essentially, you can "unlock" that setting to bump up the voltage for (theoretically) higher OC potential. You can also, irreversibly damage the GPU with this setting as well.

Be careful. Go very slow with any changes here. BTW, more voltage means more heat and more risk.

First of all you need to TOTALLY remove all the old drivers. Use this link.
http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/
Note:
Select the respective company(i.e Nvidia or ATI) drivers to be uninstalled.
Use clean and restart option.
And then install the new drivers after rebooting.
Then try OCing.
