Solution

ECC memory allows for the detection and correction of a single bit read error (one incorrect bit out of 64 bits per transfer) and for the detection but not correction of multi-bit read errors (two or more incorrect bits out of 64 bits per transfer). Bit errors are quite rare; the usual result is an application crash or system crash; data corruption is also possible.
ECC memory has no bearing on performance, just reliability.

Most consumer motherboards do not support ECC. On some motherboards the modules may work but simply have the ECC components disabled. Adding ECC memory will not improve performance at all, it's used only for high-availability servers.
