Graphics card issues, could be a dead card?

The current computer is about 3 years old with a Radeon HD 6850. About 6 months ago, i had issues with the card, couldn't fix them, removed the card and the computer was working fine with onboard graphics. Recently, I decided to give the graphics card one last try before chucking in, and put it back in the system. Initially, my PC turned on, but there was just a black screen, and nothing happened. Then I plugged my cable into the second port, and the PC turned on, but after the "Starting Windows" message was there, nothing else appeared. I then booted using low-res mode, installed new drivers, and it finally booted up(very slowly) and let me log into my user. However, upon testing a game, lines vertical lines showed upon the screen and then a BSOD popped. 0x00000124. So, is this a faulty card or is there some other issue?

Can you boot into safe mode to check if all the needed drivers are installed and are the newest for the GPU?
You probably know but you have to boot into safe mode with the GPU installed :)

Yea they are the newest ones, the only ones newer are beta drivers.
On another note, my screen also like splits in half sometimes before the flickering lines appear.

Can you try out the Beta drivers to see if the problem is still there?

Then the GPU could be faulty do you have another system you can check it onto, or do you have another GPU to test the motherboard connections?
But its more likely to be a GPU problem :(

I don't have a second system to try it out in.
I would have accepted it was a dead card long ago, but why does it boot up fine for like the first 10 minutes and then crashes? If it was a dead card, wouldn't it just not show an image at all? Sorry if this a dumb question, but I just wanna make sure of everything before I throw it away.

Could be a overheating problem, or the card just cant hold up for very long after being turned on :/

Ok, one last thing. I decided to do a system restore because I had just installed some updates this morning, and now windows services weren't loading because of the frequent crashes. While in system restore, which has a smaller resolution and a simpler theme, I did not have any graphics issues, even though the restore takes some time to complete. Could it be that some files or drivers are causing the issues and I need to like reinstall windows?

In the point that you restored to do you still have the latest drivers installed?

The thing is, while I was running system restore, the card didn't crash, but recovery itself failed for every point I tried

Ok then, i would reinstall Windows if thats the problem.
Maybe all of this could have just been a Windows problem :)
