This is the motherboard i have http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3908#ov

Originally i wanted to get the FX-8350. But I was told that the 8350 cpu wont work with my motherboard. I was wondering what the best possible CPU i can get for this motherboard is? I was looking at the FX-6300 or the FX-8150. Which would be better? I mainly play games. I play a lot of CPU intensive games (ARMA 3, PS2, etc). Should i get one of those or just save up some more money and go Intel? I plan on upgrading my GPU as well to the r9 270x.

My current system setup is this:

AMD Phenom II x4 955BE @3.2Ghz
Windows 8.1 64-bit
12GB ram
AMD Radeon HD 6850 1GB

Thanks.

you "might" be able to get it to work with a firmware update. It would be worth reaching out to their support team to check - the 990 series should work though even some of those require a BIOS and firmware update.

I have an 8150 running with a 990FX Sabertooth - those boards are amazing and even the 8150s can do amazing things with overclocking and proper cooling. The 8350 is definitely more efficient than the 8150 and their 9000 series procs are a little expensive and psychotically power hungry and need water cooling to survive with any overclocking whatsoever.

Though I like my 8150, if I were to do it all over again I would probably go with an Intel build - even the Ivy Bridge procs are more resource efficient and better for gaming and encoding. If you do end up having to replace your motherboard and you have the money, ride out the storm until the next gen of procs release and pick up the an i5.

on your link, if you click on the Support option you will see CPU support above Driver selection dropbox.

Your board will run an Fx-8300 as well as the Fx-6300. These would be the ones to try and get just be sure to upgrade your bios first. Do not plan on overclocking.

That board supports FX cpu's. Who ever told you that it doesn't is dead wrong. The 6300 and 8320 are from the same family of cpu's. THAT BEING SAID- don't even think of popping and 8320 or 8350 in it. The board will throttle due to the poor vrm's on the board. it is a 4+1 phase. You need a board with 8+2 phase. Also you can see the board has no heatsink on the vrm's. To be honest. That board stinks.

Neither 970 nor 990 boards require bios updates to run Vishera cpu's. They supported them out of the box. Most 890 boards never supported Steamroller or Piledriver.

Well, after looking at how much a motherboard and an intel i5 or i7 would cost, i don't think i will be able to afford it anytime soon. So how much of a performance difference could i expect from the 6300?

I didn't think the motherboard i have could support the 8320 or 8350 as it has the 970 chipset instead of the 990. Also it's not supported on the CPU list from gigabyte.
