I have a dell system unit with windows 7 and a Samsung monitor with built in speakers.

Ever since I bought this computer, my monitor's speaks have made a constant buzzing, static/white noise like sound. A sound that persisted even when headphones were plugged into the monitor. BUT, if I plugged my headphones into the system unit there was not static noise through headphones at all. So just to clarify, the sound worked fine through both of the jacks in the monitor and system unit, it just so happened that the static noise only came from the monitor. Even so, I would always keep my headphones plugged into the monitor, despite the obnoxious static. This is because with the length of most headphone cords it was more convenient than plugging them into the system unit.

I have included the information above as background information, because at this point I have become accustomed to the static. The real problem I have came about when I turned on my computer after being gone on vacation for 3 weeks to find that no sound OR static was coming form the monitor's speakers. I made sure that the sound wasn't low or muted and even plugged headphones into the monitor, there was still nothing. Over the sound icon in the lower right of my computer screen there was a red circle with a white "X" over the icon. I clicked on it to try to figure out what the issue was and this message came up. "Plug in the speaker, headset or headphone. The peripheral does not appear to be plugged in." I had never seen this message before and was frustrated, because my monitor has speakers built into it, so it shouldn't need to have anything plugged in for it to work, and even when I plugged in headphones and other speakers to the monitor's jack it still wouldn't work and the same message as before came up (I made sure to check that it wasn't just that pair of headphones). Upon further inspection I plugged my headphones into the system unit's headphone jack and to my surprise the sound worked fine there. So it appears that when a speaker or headphones is plugged into the system unit the sound works fine and without buzzing, but not at all when plugged into the monitor!

No one touched my computer while I was gone and nothing else about my computer was any different. so this problem is extremely frustrating to say the least. Sorry for the length of this thread, but If anyone could help me out with this problem I would be very grateful!

Audio to the monitor goes through the HDMI cable... and there must be a setting in Control Panel / Sound Device Properties where you can enable or disable monitor video which should include audio through HDMI cable.

You may also have a Control Panel program where you can make the necessary adjustments. E.G.: Nvidia Control Panel.
You do have to plug something from the PC to the monitor to make sound come out, how else is supposed to get there?

Either A, using a 3.5mm stereo jack from the speakers out on the PC to the monitor, or if the monitor supports, HDMI, using HDMI as HDMI will carry sound and video.

You don't mention the monitor model number to look up, so I can't tell you what you should use, nor how you have your PC hooked to the monitor.
