What to upgrade? CPU or GPU? (Or both??)

So, I've asked this before but never really got a good response.

I have an I5-2500K on air lightly OCed to 4ghz. I also have a HD 7970 ghz edition. Lastly, I have 16 gigs of dominator ram and a new SSD.

So, here is what I need my computer to do: Play Planetside 2 on max everything in the biggest battles and minimally hit 60fps and never drop below.

Right now, I hit the high 50s for the most part and it drops in very heavy particle action/large battles.

I thought the GPU was a big hitter and the CPU was at fault, but after doing a lot of research, it seemed to me that even Devil's Canyon wouldn't be worth the upgrade and I am getting off waiting on Skylake. I know the GPU should be viable as a high end card. Am I delusional? If the upgrade path is the GPU, should I go for a new single card solution or go x-fire with one of the new R9 280X (which is the same as my card with 50mhz shaved off (I can OC the new card I am sure).

So, what do you guys think?

p.s. when playing Planetside 2 and you activate the ingame FPS meter, it always says its the GPU that is holding me back.

At what resolution are you playing the game? I don't think your cpu is holding you back, but if you are playing at 1080p neither would the gpu hold you back, the HD7970 is a very powerfull gpu.

Upgrade the GPU first because its more important in gaming than the CPU and a new gen GPU will hold you on for a long time :)

The i5-2500K is still fairly close to being among the fastest CPUs money can buy so I would agree that there is very little worth upgrading to on that angle.

On the GPU side, you can start Catalyst Control Center or Process Explorer and take a look at GPU load to see if the GPU is indeed close to 100% when your frame rates dip.

I personally suggest that you go with a AMD GPU like the R9 290X modded by ASUS because its a better price that a Nvidia GPU and has somewhat the same pixel rate :)
Btw whats your budget for a GPU upgrade?

Budget-wise I like to stay at or under $400US. I see the 7970ghz isn't selling for much on Ebay anymore, but I guess I would sell it and put whatever it sold for above the $400.

If you can get your budget for a little over 500$ then go with the R9 290X by ASUS if not stick with the normal R9 290 by ASUS
The R9 290X has a higher memory clock at 5400 MHz and a slighty higher clock
So its basicly up to you :)
