I got a sony vaio e series with windows 8 installed on it. I got it from a friend and was told to re-install windows. It had a bunch of spyware and malware on it. Anyway, when i first tried to boot from my windows dvd i got a message saying "Operating system not found" and when I tried to install windows with a usb, setup ran and i deleted all the partitions and when i tired to install i got this message "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system". I looked around and people said to fix this use a windows install disc. So im stuck in a back and forth situation. Also to add, i did change the laptop to legacy boot.

Solution
Ok, I figured it out. If anyone else is having problems, follow these steps http://druss.pp.ua/2014/07/fixed-setup-was-unable-to-create-a-new-system-partition-or-locate-an-existing-system-partition-during-installing-windows-8-18-7-vista-etc-from-usb/

Hi, i know this is old, but maybe this solution will help others!

Press shift+F10 when you're in the installer.

run diskpart.exe from the commmand prompt that opens.

Rund the following in diskpart:
Sel disk 0
clean

exit back to windows installer and try again.
